Left-Over Friends

We invited some left-over friends
to join us for dinner tonight.

Meaning--
they are the kind of friends
you can serve left-overs to.

It was somewhat impromptu--
All the better.

And I could have served on paper plates.

But--I didn't.

Because...
Left-over friends are the most valuable kind.

They know my worth--
Is really only in Christ.

They are not impressed--
Except by His impressive grace.

My failures do not shock--
But just reveal God's mercy.

Our children are not scrutinized--
But embraced in Christ's love.

And if the meal is seasoned with joy or tears...
Left-over friends will rejoice or weep right along side.

As I was cutting up the strawberries...
Our son said,
"Isn't tonight going to be awesome?"

Not poetic.
But real.

And that's also how I feel.

Because left-overs
Are that down-home-solid-real-meal-substance--
The kind where you aren't:

Tired from striving.
Tired from straining.
Tired from aiming to impress.

Just the comfort
Mac-and-cheese friendship.

It truly is the best.
So thankful for all of our left-over friendships.
