Last year my husband researched three Medal of Honor Recipients so he could share their stories with the kiddos...
This year we're going to visit the grave of 1st Lt. Cornelius A. Neil Sabin--who nearly died on July 11, 1944 in Normandy, France. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Cross for his valor. Sabin went on to teach at Lewis and Clark for nearly 30 years. His grave is located at Section X Site 334.
My husband is also hoping to share the story of Wayne Max Bissell who received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions during World War II. Bissell was one of 80 men who volunteered for the Doolittle Raiders Force, knowing that his chances of survival were extremely remote. He is buried at Plot Z, O, 1194.
Just taking a moment to
Pause.
And to honor those who have given so much for--
"God, principle and love of country"

What a wonderful way to show the kids what Memorial day is about.
That is a great idea to research different people before you visit! Such an interesting way to connect history!
Thanks...it really is interesting to read their stories...and if you live by a national cememtery, you can find most of the info. on their websites...ro at least names to start with.
What a fantastic thing to do. We live near Maddingley American cemetery in the UK and visit often. My kids love to hear the stories of the brave men and women who fought. We are heading to Normandy next week to wrap up our WWII unit.
Thank you for your beautiful post. My brother is laid to rest at Willamette, I know my mother was there today among the many. What a wonderful way to share with your children, the history of this great day's purpose. Glad to ahve stopped by, have a blessed day.
What a wonderful idea! It makes a trip to the cemetery much more meaningful and interesting, both for the adults and the little ones!
I'm Canadian, and we do not have memorial day, so would you please fill me up on this holiday... is it about a particular war, or just for all the soldiers???
What a beautiful way to remember and honor.
