A Litmus Test...

I want faith that walks.

So often...
the state of our vertical relationship with God--
can be seen in our horizontal relationship with others.

My husband says:

Rejoice with those who rejoice.
Weep with those who weep.
That's a good litmus test for where your heart is.

When I see
weeping...
Do I dig in and face the pain...to let my heart hurt alongside?

When I see
rejoicing...
Does my heart soar with joy for the rejoicer or is it envy that rules?

By this all people will know that you are my disciples,
if you have love for one another.
~John 13:35

I never thought about it before, but what a great test...
Do we rejoice with those who rejoice & weep w/ those who weep!
Next time someone shares, I am going to stop & consider my response to their heart condition & see how my response measures up! Insightful!

This is so true. Thanks for posting this today. It's something that I needed to hear!

That is a great test.

Your scripture made me think of these lyrics from an old song, "They will know we are Christians by our love, by our love ... they will know that we are Christians by our love."

Blessings!

Such great insights! Thanks for sharing and I clicked a vote for you for Circle of Moms. I must say there is some interesting competition you are up against. How long does the contest run?

Such good words, Kara!

Beth--I read your comment this morning as I was heading out the door for a field trip....and kept humming that song all throughout the day :)
Thank you.

Tracy--it goes until June 8th. I dread "vote for me" scenarios...but it has been encouraging to see the Christian blog community come together and support one another. And for reasons beyond my comprehension (except that I have unbelievably supportive friends :) we're still *barely* hanging on in the top 25.
So...we'll see. People can vote every day...

Thank you Ann...God has used your words to change my heart.

Beautiful words, and such truth. I think the test for me is to rejoice -- so often my own heart gets in the way. Thank you for reminding me to watch that.

And I read your post about weeping -- it was beautiful and powerful.

"the state of our vertical relationship with God--
can be seen in our horizontal relationship with others."...oh yes...may we see others as GOD sees them through His Eyes.

You know, I got a chance to live this out (the rejoice with those who rejoice) with friends who were able to go to paradise on vacation. So few people rejoiced with them, more replied to pictures and posts with "Jealous" and "so envious" or "don't rub it in" responses. I realized how I usually do that too... and have been convicted to REJOICE with those who rejoice, even in the small things. Thanks!e

Kara this is so true. I was taught a few years ago that if all your relationships are falling apart don't look around look up because that relationship isn't healthy. Great advice. Thanks for linking up this weekend. :)
