N.D. Wilson's-- Notes from the Tilt-A-Whirl

I shared a bit from Wilson's Tilt-A-Whirl back in August...and my husband and I recently watched the bookumentary. Both were powerfully convicting and hauntingly beautiful...

"You have been born into a narrative, you have been given freedom.  Act, and act well until you reach your final scene" (108).

"The choices in front of you never go away.  Scene after scene is given to you and the teeming universe in the audience waits for your reaction, for your line, waits to see if you'll yell at the fat-faced child who spilled the milk, or if you'll laugh and kiss a cheek" (35).

"But if any all-powerful God is somehow made evil because He has given me pain, an impotent God is tainted in the same way." (70)

"Become a character that's not bored, and therefore, not boring" (from the DVD).

Recapture the Wonder--by Ravi Zacharias

Several years ago, my husband heard Ravi talk about child-like-wonder and it impacted him greatly.
This book had the same effect on me...I want to marvel at the mystery of God and His creation as I once did when I was a child.

"God is like the light.  Wonder is like the shadow.
If you chase the shadow you will never catch up to it.  It might even disappear.
If you walk toward the light, the shadow will always pursue you.
That is when the heart sings with gladness." (165).

Redemption-- by Mike Wilkerson

This was my second time reading this book.  I read it backwards--the first time with others in mind.  The second time--to be personally "freed from the idols (I) worship and the wounds (I) carry".
An incredible, powerful, hope-full book...

Wendell Barry's-- Hannah Coulter

I shared about this book a few weeks ago as well.  I've been trying to add a bit more fiction into the mix. And now I'm ready to read the whole series.  Such a beautiful book...a character study really...not flashy...just a window into real love and real relationships...with all the struggles and changes and sorrow and redemption.

"After they were all gone, I was mourning over them to Nathan.

I said, 'I  just wanted them to have a better chance than I had.'
Nathan said, 'Don't complain about the chances you had,'
in the same way exactly that he used to tell the boys, 'Don't cuss the weather.'
Sometimes you can say dreadful things without knowing it.
Nathan understood this better than I did.
Like several of his one-sentence conversations, this one stuck in my mind and finally changed it.

The change came too late, maybe, but it turned my mind inside out like a sock" (112).

Becoming God's True Woman--edited by Nancy Leigh DeMoss

This is an excellent collection of essays...
Just take a peak at the list of contributors--P. Bunny Wilson, Barbara Hughes (one of my favorites), Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Susan Hunt (another favorite) and several others...

Grace for the Good Girl-- by Emily P. Freeman

This is one of the best books I've read in a long, long time.
Er...um...I cannot relate to anything in this book.
I have no idea what she is talking about.  Who hides behind a mask?

Ugh.  Actually--I can relate to this book so much that I'm almost embarrassed to recommend it (and that right there proves how much I needed to read it).  Grace for the Good Girl is honestly one of the best books I've read in a long time.  I'm going to devote a whole post to it, once I finish.  If you've ever found yourself defending Martha (sure...Mary sat around just "choosing the better place" while Martha did all the work)  or if you've felt that the party should've been for the Older Son (not the younger kid returning from several years of partying)...then you'll probably relate to (and you just might need) Emily's words:

"I wanted to give myself permission to sit down on the inside and live like I have a God who knows what He's doing" (65).

"We hide too.  I hide behind my mask of performance so people will think I am smart, capable, and put together.  I hide behind the reputation I have established rather than risk trusting an unpredictable Jesus.  I hide behind my positive emotions rather than let you see my reality.  I hide behind my list of rules so I can check off each one, as if I'm another step closer to God because I've followed them.  I hide behind my mask of strength because I'm ashamed of my weakness" (114).

Give Them Grace--Elyse Fitzpatrick

If you truly believe that God is the only one who can transform a child's heart, then you will love this book.
I love it.
If you pray for children who will love God whole-heartedly, deeply, and if "outward goodness for the sake of being good" scares you a little (or a lot), then you will love this book.
I love it.
If you want a book that points parents to the Cross of Christ and the need that every one of us has for His grace, then you will love this book.
I love it.

Reclaiming Adoption--edited by Dan Cruver

Adoption is so close to my heart and with authors John Piper, Dan Cruver, Scotty Smith, Rick Phillips, and Jason Kovacs as the contributors to the book...I'm anxious to dig into this one!

"This book is about living missionally in God's adoptive love" (back cover).

What's it Like to Be Married to Me?--Linda Dillow

Can I just say--Linda Dillow's other books...Creative Counterpart and Calm My Anxious Heart will forever be favorites of mine.  They had a huge impact on my life during our early years of marriage.  I am very much wanting to read this one too...

 BUT--
Forever (Why You Can't Live Without It) by Paul David Tripp just arrived in the mail this morning and I'll probably put everything else to the side until I've read it cover to cover.  Nothing changes how I live now, like the reminder that eternity is real, Heaven is real.
